Butch Shelby

James H. "Butch", Shelby, Jr., Age 73 of Indian Trail, went home to be with his heavenly Father on June 6, 2014 surrounded by loving family after a brave battle with cancer. Butch was born in Charlotte on March 8, 1941 to the late James and Ruby "Mae" (Smith) Shelby. He joined the Navy in 1958 and was a PBR boat captain during the Vietnam War. He was also a signalman on several ships before he retired after 23 years as "Chief" in 1981. Butch is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Shelby; son: Tony (Kelly) Fortson; daughters: Donna Shelby Fortson, Melinda Shelby (Bud) Eakes and Kristi Shelby (Chad) Smith; Darrell Price (Trish), and Karen Pressley (Mick) Byrd; a loving grandfather to 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; his brother, Jerry Dover and his wife, Carolyn; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Butch loved being in nature, golfing, hiking, working in his garden and had a deep love of his animals. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Hospice of Union County or their excellent care. -
