Carol Ann Powell

Carol Ann Powell (nee Rubner) was called home May 7, 2011. She was 68 years old. Carol was preceded in death by her loving husband Noel Chappell Powell ("Buddy"). She is survived by her devoted daughters Michelle Pire and Leah Pire Cox and grandchildren Evan Cox, and Bradley and Audrey Pire-Conway. Carol also survived by her brothers and sisters, James (Susan) Rubner, John Rubner, Mary Bong (James), Joanne Wille (Michael), Thomas (Lynn) Rubner and Richard Rubner. She is also survived by Scott Conway, Thomas Stea and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Leonard Rubner and Brothers Joseph and Robert Rubner. Carol was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and spent the first 30 years of her life there before moving to the Clearwater, Florida area. In 2003, she and Buddy relocated to Huntersville, North Carolina. Carol was very devoted to her family and had a passion for entertaining her family and friends on every occasion imaginable. She and her daughters were as close as any mother and daughter could be. Her bond with her grandchildren was very deep and the love she shared with them and her daughters is beyond words. She had great fun over her lifetime with her brothers and sisters and extended family. She will be deeply missed by her family. Carol was a very creative woman who had an incredible flair for decorating, cooking, and making crafts. She also had a great passion for astrology which she studied for over 30 years. In 1988, Carol obtained an Associates of Art degree in Nursing Home Administration from St. Petersburg College, in Clearwater, Florida. She held numerous positions in the medical field primarily in administration. Shortly after losing her husband to lung cancer in 2008, Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought the disease hard for over 2 years before finally laying to rest in her home. Per her wishes, Carol was cared for in the final months of life by her loving family at home. Her sister Joanne provided Carol this final wish with tremendous compassion and devotion and was the one who stuck by her side night and day. Her daughters are beyond words and extremely grateful to Joanne for all the wonderful care she gave and for allowing our mother's final days on this earth to be at her home, surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren. We don't know what we would have done without her. The family would also like to acknowledge the following people for their love, support and friendship: her dear neighbors Allison and Julie who provided so much support and love in Carol's life, infusion nurses Pat and Allison, Dr. Wm. Mitchell and staff and the wonderful folks associated with Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care. A private memorial celebration is being held by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care at P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, North Carolina 28233-3549 or your favorite Humane Society in honor and memory of Carol.
