Carolyn Voncannon Austin, 84, of Indian Trail, North Carolina, peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 22, 1940, in Stanly County, North Carolina, Carolyn lived a life filled with purpose and joy, ultimately departing to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Carolyn retired from BellSouth in 1961 and also worked for LifeTouch. She volunteered at her church, Hopewell Baptist, and was an active member where she made many friends. Her teaching in Sunday School and involvement on the cooking team for Senior Luncheons were just a few of the many ways she shared her love and wisdom. Most recently, her contributions to Mary’s Class significantly impacted those around her, illustrating her unwavering commitment to her faith and her community.
In her personal life, Carolyn was married for 60 wonderful years to the love of her life, Craven Austin, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a nurturing home and raised a family that brought her immense pride and joy. She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Somers (Doug), her son, Brian Austin (Anna), three cherished grandchildren, Hillary Somers Evans (Leighton), Makalya Somers Kiker (Kemp), and Zachary Austin (Abbey), and two delightful great-grandchildren, Audrey and Amelia Kiker. Her legacy of love continues to thrive through them and their cherished memories of her.
Beyond her immediate family, Carolyn maintained close relationships with her siblings, Jerry Voncannon, Darrell Voncannon, and Judy Foley.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Craven Austin, her parents, Elwood and Laura Voncannon, and siblings Ollie Mae Griffin, E.J. Voncannon, Evelyn Hooks, and Patricia Reynolds.
Carolyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Breakfast out with friends was a special delight with lots of laughter and fellowship. Her generous heart and kindness were evident in her compassionate service to others often working behind the scenes to lift those around her, leaving a lasting impact on the lives she touched.
