CHARLOTTE, NC - Eugene Cole Pitman, 87, passed away at home, surrounded by his family and cats, on April 20, 2021, after a battle with dementia.

He was born in Charlotte, NC, at Presbyterian Hospital, on December 17, 1933 and was the son of the late Leon S. and Kathleen Morris Pitman. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Leon Pitman, Jr.

Gene graduated from Central High School, class of 1952, and married his high school sweetheart, Delores Martin. They celebrated 68 years of marriage this year.

He served in the United States Marine Corps and, upon his discharge, began a career in the trucking industry, becoming President and owner of East Coast Trailer and Equipment Company, a position he held until his retirement. Gene was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church.

Gene and Delores enjoyed traveling all over the world and spending time at their beach house in Surfside Beach, SC, with their family and friends. He loved to fly his airplane with Mike and Pam. Gene dearly loved his family and his many cats were the joy in his later life.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Terri Graham ( Mel ) and Pam Pitman; son, Mike Pitman; granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emily; and great-grandson, Henry.

A graveside service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 23 at Sharon Memorial Park, with visitation following at the gravesite.

Memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association ( www.billygraham.org ) and The Charlotte Rescue Mission ( charlotterescuemission.org ).

The family would like to extend special thanks to hospice and caregivers, Tracy Phillips and Michelle Bell.
