Harvey Lee Roy Henson, 73, went home to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, November 4th. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy. Together they have two sons Rick and Scott. Rick and his wife Renee have a son Joel, 16. Scott and his wife Liz have a daughter Allyson, 11. She was the first girl born into the immediate family since the birth of Grandma Nancy. As you can see in the many pictures that have been added to the Memories Photo Gallery, Harvey loved these grandchildren dearly. Harv is also survived by his brother, Ronald Henson. Harvey and Nancy met at Vestal Central High School, Vestal, NY in Biology class in 10th grade but didn't date until the 12th grade. They dated on and off and on Christmas Eve 1958, they were engaged and then married on July 11, 1959. Rick came along in 1963 and Scott in 1964. Harvey worked as a meat cutter for many years, then worked a few years at General Electric. Harv worked at IBM for the majority of his working years and retired in 1992 after over 25 years with the company. His work included numerous testing positions and computer system maintenance. Harv and his family also spent one year of his tenure at IBM at the Boulder, Colorado copier plant where Harv fulfilled a long time desire to live in the Colorado Rockies. Harvey enjoyed many things during his life such as hunting, fishing, bowling, archery, the Colorado Rocky Mountains and golf. Harv's favorite past time was playing golf and he became very proficient in it. His love of golf led to his starting a small club building business as well as a period of employment at a golf course in Asheville. After moving to Charlotte Harvey worked at Lowes Foods but only for a short time due to failing health. Harvey was driven to work and was blessed with a multitude of skills which made him proficient in fixing all manner of Electrical and Mechanical machines. Through the years many friends and family members called on Harv's Handy Man skills for help ranging from car and appliance repairs to home additions. In recent years, Harv's numerous physical afflictions took a toll on his health and curtailed both his work and play. Harv's physical afflictions were many, but the combination of diabetes, heart arrhythmia and lung cancer (in remission) took the largest toll on his health along with several mild heart attacks and strokes. His passing was caused by an accumulation of his illnesses. We thank the Lord that with his sudden passing he was spared a lengthy time of suffering. Harv's now with the Lord. Many times he was known to say, "there had better be golf courses in Heaven." We suspect that he is out on that heavenly course right now perfecting his swing and putting with his new glorified body. **In lieu of flowers, please refer to the column left of the obituary and select "Place A Donation" for the names of organizations preferred by the family. -
