Howard Eugene Barnes Sr.

Howard Eugene Barnes, Sr., 64, passed from this life to eternal life on Saturday, January 12, 2013 following a brief hospitalization due to cardiac arrest. He was surrounded by his sons and his siblings at the time of his passing. He was a loving father and a faithful member of Central Church of God. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Howard was born on December 17, 1948, to Will and Mary (Morgan) Barnes. He attended J.H. Gunn School from the first through eleventh grades. In 1967, Howard was a member of the first graduating class of Independence Senior High School. A lover of the game of basketball, Howard played basketball during his high school years at both J.H. Gunn and Independence Senior High. After graduating, Howard continued to play the game with anyone willing to take his challenge. When he was not playing basketball, Howard enjoyed watching basketball as an avid fan! After graduating from high school, Howard attended Kings College in Charlotte, N.C. where he studied business. Afterward, he began a career in retail sales management; a career that he continued throughout most of his adult life. Howard's long and successful career in retail sales moved him to several states, including Florida, Illinois, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Howard married Olga Mestey in 1974 and two sons were born to their union. He is survived by his two sons, Howard Barnes Jr., of Charlotte, and Terrance Barnes of Wilmington, Delaware. He is also survived by two brothers, Will A. Barnes (Vanessa) and Phillip "Tony" Barnes; four sisters, Carrie Durley (Bose); Willie Alexander (Jerry); Lottie Glover and Lynette Barnes (Alvin Thomas); four grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. *In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the National Kidney Foundation, 4819 Park Rd.
