John Raymond "Jack" Penick, 91, of Charlotte died Sunday, April 6, 2014. Loved by family and friends, Jack was affectionately known as the "candy man" of fund raising for school projects. Jack served as a Navy Corpsman attached to the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific theater during WW II. He was awarded purple hearts for wounds received on Saipan and Iwo Jima. Favorite pastimes included playing baseball/softball, attending sports events, gardening, and socializing. He never met a stranger and was never at a loss for words. When ordering any food in a restaurant, the server was sure to hear "NO ONIONS"-even with ice cream! His humor will be missed. He had a magical personality. He will be missed! He is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, to whom he was married for 60 years. They were loving parents to John Penick (Jan), Janice Sloop (David), Jeff Penick (Kris), and Joleen Hyatt (Tony). Their extended family includes 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren who all knew him as "Gram Jack". Since 1958, Jack had been a member of Amity Presbyterian Church. It is only fitting that a celebration of his life should be held where so many fond memories can be remembered by family and friends. -
