James S. Griffin

August 15, 1933 — February 9, 2013

James Shuford Griffin, son of the late Reverend J.D. Griffin and Eva Griffin, was born August 15, 1933 in Monroe, NC. "Jimmie" graduated from Bethel High School in Midland, NC where he excelled in sports, setting numerous records in basketball and baseball. He was voted Most Athletic and Wittiest by his classmates. After high school Jim attended Wingate College. Quick to tell a story and even quicker with a smile, Jim served people professionally, first as a funeral director then later as the proprietor of Granny's Kitchen restaurant in Cherokee, NC, ultimately establishing, running and retiring from James S. Griffin Insurance Agency. Jim had an engaging personality and could be the life of the party. He typically introduced himself to strangers with a line such as "Could I meet you friend? My name is Jim Griffin". That greeting is simple, yet it let you know immediately that Jim wanted to get to know you, that he was interested in you. Jim loved golf and Tar Heel basketball and could talk at length about both. He especially enjoyed talking about times with friends at the old Eastwood Golf Club and, naturally, Tar Heel victories over Duke. Jim was admired and looked up to by his younger siblings. He spoke with great pride about his children and grandchildren and good memories of time spent with family and friends. Though often separated by miles, Jim treasured those moments with family and friends. Jim is survived by his wife Martha, her sons David D. Carriker (Susan) of Rock Hill, SC, Randy L. Carriker (Sharon) of Charlotte; his children, Ricky Griffin, Robert Griffin and Melonie Williams; his brother P. Michael Griffin; his sisters LaVon Beck and Becky Montgomery; and grandchildren. *In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Rd. Mint Hill, NC 28227, where Jim was a member, or Boys and Girls Club of York County, 410 E. Black St. Rock Hill, SC 29730. -
