Jo Ann Lyerly Walters, surrounded by loved ones, peacefully went home to be with the Lord and join loved ones that have gone before her on Thursday, May 24, 2018. Jo Ann was born in Cleveland County, NC and made her home in the Charlotte NC area. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, her generation's family matriarch and friend to many. She balanced raising a family with a career in the insurance industry while taking leadership roles in the community in the PTA, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was "mom" to many more than the two children she raised. Her home was open to all and there was always an extra seat at her table. Whether summer visits from nieces & nephew, hanging out after school or on weekends or hosting scouts, in her home you were always treated as family. Her hospitality, hostess skills, love and generosity will be fondly remembered by all. After the first round of children had passed through her home, as "Mammy" she continued the legacy of love and providing a home away from home to her grandchildren. She adored them and they her, bringing renewed joy to her home and beauty to their lives. Family left to treasure her memory are son Tim Walters (Kim Smallwood) and daughter Lorrie Walters; grandchildren Lacy (Sammy) Dobler, Logan Ward, Austin Walters, Josh (Dana) Masters and Justin Masters; great-granddaughters Stella Dobler and Denver Bria Masters; sister Libby (Lindsay) Keith and many other loving and supportive family members. Especially in later years "JoJo's" nieces, Danielle Lofty and Teresa Fesperman, and their families became an even more important part of her life providing invaluable support, love and companionship. Loved ones there to meet her in heaven are her husband of 52 years, Jerry Walters; parents Talbert Lyerly, Sr. and Grace Runyan Lyerly; brother T.A. Lyerly, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday June 2, 2018 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church North Campus, 13200 Mallard Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28262. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to HGBC Children's Ministry would be appreciated - https://www.shelbygiving.com/g3/h/ or Hickory Grove Baptist Church North Campus, 13200 Mallard Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28262.
