Jonathan Howard Gates, 21, of Midland, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 12, 2018. He was born May 8, 1997, in Charlotte and was the son of Michael H. Gates and the late Kimberly M. Gates. His immediate family, in addition to his father, includes his sister, Breanna Lynn Gates; his paternal grandmother, Peggy Gates of Monroe; and his maternal grandparents, Larry Mosley of Little River, SC and Evelyn Mosley of Indian Trail. In addition to his mother, Kimberly, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Howard Gates. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Jonathan went to school and graduated from Central Academy in Indian Trail, NC. Jonathan was a very kind and thoughtful individual who enjoyed helping others and was very passionate about life. He often was a source of encouragement to those around him and completely invested in those relationships. He had a strong relationship with his family; especially his mom. Jonathan missed Kim dearly and without a doubt was greeted with her embrace when he went home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2018. Jonathan was very protective and helpful to his older sister, Breanna. He was always ready to assist her in any way he could. Above all else they were best friends. Outside of his family, Jonathan volunteered at Joni and Friends and enjoyed Joy Prom where he could use his impressive dance moves. He also volunteered in the community and was always ready to help his family and friends out. Jonathan had an excellent aptitude for using technology and ran the sound and video at children's church for Central Church of God at Lake Park for several years, volunteering alongside his family. Jonathan recently participated in the Celebrate Recovery ministry at Central Church and enjoyed the fellowship and teaching. He attended the annual apologetics conference at Charlotte Christian for several years and was very knowledgeable of God's Word. Jonathan was passionate about the return of Jesus Christ and enjoyed reading his mother's student Bible as he longed for the Lord's return. He was such a joy to be around and often was the life of parties leading everyone by busting out dance moves. He was a huge sports fan and loved the Carolina Panthers and Tarheels. He enjoyed playing basketball and lettered in varsity basketball as a Central Academy Eagle under the coaching of Dale Similton. After high school, Jonathan attended Central Piedmont Community College where he studied business marketing. Beyond sports, Jonathan found joy in cooking and made the best guacamole. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed taking photography classes. He was very passionate about his landscaping business and recently celebrated fixing up his mower. Jonathan will be greatly missed by his family and friends. -
