Karen Marie Hungerford

February 25, 1954 — October 17, 2020


Karen Marie Hungerford, 66 longtime and most recently summertime resident of Clayton, NY passed away on October 17th at home surrounded by her family. 

Born on February 25th, 1954, she was the only child of Carmela Lodico.  Raised in Brighton and the Fairport area of Rochester, Karen attended Our Lady of Mercy High School.  After graduating in 1972, she studied Graphic Art and Design at Mohawk Valley Community College.  MVCC is where she met her husband of almost 46 years, Peter Hungerford of Clayton NY.

Residing in Clayton after falling in love with the St. Lawrence River, both Karen and Peter owned and operated Hungerford Hardware and The Waterfront Market.  After raising her family Karen and her husband explored the Southeastern coast while living on their boat Karefree.  After some time they settled in Port St Lucie, FL while still making sure to enjoy the summers in the Thousand Islands. Most recently she settled in Mint Hill, NC to be near her grandchildren.  She loved spending time on the boat with her family, exploring new places with her husband and dogs in their RV and talking over coffee with good friends.

Karen was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2014 and fought like a warrior until the end.  Her family is incredibly grateful to have had her in their lives.

Karen is survived by her husband Peter and her two children: Adam Lynn Hungerford and his wife Katherine of Clayton , NY and Genora Lynn Cole and her husband Justin of Indian Trail, NC, and two grandchildren: Ashley Lynn Cole and Daniel Thomas Cole.

Karen attended St Mary’s in Clayton, NY, St.Luke’s in Mint Hill, NC and Holy Redeemer in Palm City, FL.

A funeral mass will be planned for the summer of 2021. Donations in Karen’s name can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region or the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance - give.ocrahope.org
