Kenneth George Limmer

July 22, 1923 — May 1, 2017

Kenneth George Limmer, 93, of Charlotte, passed away Monday, May 1, 2017. Mr. Limmer was born July 22, 1923, in Newark, New Jersey, the son of the late Frank Xavier Limmer and LaRetta Jenny Miller Limmer. He was preceded in death by both parents; wife of 47 years, Verna Ruth Apgar Limmer; brother, Richard Limmer (last resided in Vero Beach, FL) Kenneth is survived by three sons: Jon Limmer (Julie) of Indian Land, SC; Donald Limmer (Faith) of Naperville, IL; Paul Limmer (Beth) of Sudbury, VT; as well as six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Kenneth was a 1941 Graduate of Livingston High School (NJ) and a 1948 graduate of Newark College of Engineering (NJ). College was interrupted mid way by WW II and enlistment in the US Navy. Kenneth trained as a pilot and eventually became a flight instructor. Post-war service in the US Naval Reserves led him into flying jets out of Floyd Bennett Field, Long Island, NY. He retired from Naval duties as Lieutenant Commander in 1973. Thirty-six years of employment in New Jersey with Public Service Electric and Gas were followed by 12 years of self employment as a landscaper. Retirement to New Bern, NC fulfilled a dream that lasted 26 years, though the dream was diminished by his wife's passing shortly after the move. Beginning in 1961, Kenneth enjoyed more than 50 years of vacations - then summers, then six months annually - on the eastern shore of Sebago Lake in southern Maine. The Limmer clan still has a toe-hold on Sebago and will remember Kenneth and Verna during every sunset. Career, family and pursuit of personal interests (fishing, square dancing, renovating homes) were approached from a deeply grounded personal faith in Jesus Christ. Spanning five decades and three churches, Kenneth taught Sunday School, served as S.S. Superintendent, Trustee, Deacon, then Elder. Kenneth's last eight months saw his life free of concerns of home ownership as a part of Brookdale Carriage Club of Charlotte, NC. Proximity to Jon and Julie added many special family moments, not to mention many rounds of Skip-Bo, Mexican Train Dominoes and Rummikub. A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for July 8, 2017 in the Village Chapel Presbyterian Church, New Bern, NC. Kenneth would welcome memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, going to: Village Chapel Presbyterian Church, New Bern, NC Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA Eastern Pregnancy Information Center (EPIC), New Bern, NC - -
