Mark Lay

Mark Griffin Lay passed away on July 9th, 2019 in Concord, NC surrounded by his family and a close family friend at the age of 59 after a brief battle with cancer. Mark is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 25 years Kelly (Morris) Lay; his two daughters, Jessie (Lay) Anderson and son-in-law, Ben, of Louisville, KY, and Sam (Lay-Folck) Arzu and son-in-law, Nic, of Boston, MA; his son Dallas Lay of Midland, NC; his father and mother, Paul and Sandra Lay; his brother and sister-in-law, Cory and Janet Lay; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Simone Morris; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ed and Frieda Morris; and his nieces and nephews Ryan and Abbie Lay, Taylor Lay, Tam Lay, Alex Lay, Sean and Emily Morris, and Haylee Morris, and his beloved cat and confidant Oreo Cookie Lay. He is preceded in death by his brother Brett Lay.

Mark was born November 10th, 1959 in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School. Mark married his favorite camping buddy, Kelly, in 1994, whom he loved dearly. He and Kelly are proud members of Matthews United Methodist Church, where they formed many friendships and celebrated their close relationship with God. He served in many ways in the church including as a Stephen Minister. Mark never met a stranger and was always "Happy, helpful, and friendly" and would do anything for anyone. He founded his own company, AA Tex-Lawn Co, in 1979. He and his brother, Cory, grew and managed the business together for over thirty years. Mark was a grill master, skilled hunter and fisherman, avid gardener and landscaper, all around handy-man, and most importantly a loving father to all his kids. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, July 13th at Matthews United Methodist Church, 801 S. Trade Street, Matthews, NC at 2:00 PM, with a visitation at 12:30 PM. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Mark's life. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to Matthews United Methodist Church.
