Norman Arthur Hunt, 86, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord Sunday evening, November 28, 2010, while in the care of the Harris Hospice staff of Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Bouldin (Feb 6, 1994), and his sister Barbara (Dec 13, 1984). Norman was born on July 31, 1924 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Herbert and Ethel Hunt. He had four brothers: Herbert Jr., Wally, Sheldon and Royce, and a sister Barbara who, with his mother, helped to civilize the household. At the age of 4, Norman contracted tuberculosis and was quarantined at a sanatorium (his sister joined him a short time later). Providentially, breakthroughs enabled the disease to be arrested and for both Norman and Barbara to be reunited with their family after nearly four years of separation. This early childhood experience, while emotionally isolating, gave him a love for reading and formed his quiet and reflective personality. He always enjoyed the lure of travel, both with his mother (traveling by train to meet family in Texas), or by embarking upon his own adventure as a teen - traveling across country by any means he could find for free. After serving in the Army in WWII, he met his future wife, Gladys Craib, at a USO dance in Boston. It was love at first sight and they married on July 29, 1950 in Saugus, Massachusetts. He was a devoted husband and father of three; Cathy (April 12, 1951), Diane (July 13, 1953) and Bill (May 22, 1955). Norman's engineering and manufacturing training at General Electric enabled him to pursue his technical dreams as one of the early adopters in the computer revolution at the General Electric Aircraft Engineering Group (starting in the 1960's). He was always one of the first to learn the computer programming systems and then he would use his knowledge to train the others. Norman and his family lived in Lynn, Massachusetts about one mile from the ocean. He was a passionate reader drawn to classics and science fiction and dreamed of designing and building a self- propelled airplane. He passed on his love of classical music, reading and learning to his children. Sunday drives and frequent trips for large ice cream cones on New England's newly paved highways provided wonderful family time and fond memories. Norman has always sought a spiritual understanding of God and people and was an active member of churches throughout his life. He formally gave his life to Jesus Christ through his seeking at Grace Chapel in Lexington, Massachusetts in the mid 1970's. Shortly thereafter, he and Gladys joined Wycliffe Bible Translators as volunteers in support of his daughter Cathy and David Archibald, who became missionaries in Peru. They also traveled, independently, on missions in Haiti and two extended missions in Peru. While in Peru, Norman was very moved to have the opportunity to use his computer skills to assist in publishing a New Testament translation. Norman's immediate family includes by his beloved wife, Gladys, who lives in a nursing home in Waxhaw, North Carolina; Cathy (his daughter) in Charlotte, NC; and son Bill and his wife, Lynda, of Rochester NY. He has nine grandchildren - Beckie Cybulski, Daniel Archibald, Wendy Reid, Stephen Archibald, Andrew Archibald, Julie Archibald, Lt David Hunt- USN, Lisa Hunt, Katy Hunt, John Bouldin-USN - and five great grandchildren: Ian and Devin Cybulski , Jadon and Carleigh Reid , and Guillermo Archibald. Norman's four brothers Herbert Hunt Jr., Wallace Hunt, Sheldon Hunt and Royce Hunt worked to continue annual family reunions until recently.
