Richard Nelson Holmes, affectionately known as Rick, was born on January 11, 1956, in Warren, Ohio, and departed this world on January 29, 2025, in Mint Hill, North Carolina. His journey through life was marked by an unwavering passion for family, an unparalleled work ethic, and a vivacious spirit that endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rick’s career was a tapestry woven from his early experiences at his parents' sand and gravel mine, Samco, where he first learned to operate heavy equipment at the age of 14. As he matured, Rick’s skills blossomed; he became a Master Mechanic, Truck Driver, Heavy Equipment Operator, and Foreman at Shotz Ranch, among other notable positions. His mechanical genius meant that he could fix almost anything that came his way, a testament to his determination and resourcefulness that extended far beyond mere occupation.
It was at the age of 16 that Rick met Jewell, after just one date, he proclaimed their future together, announcing his decision to marry. Together, they brought three wonderful children into the world, and their home became a sanctuary, always open to children who needed love and belonging. As time meandered on, Rick’s heart swelled with pride and joy as he embraced his role as a grandfather. He cherished precious moments with Rachel, Cody, Ray, David, Daniel, Thomas, Logan, Shannon, Toni, and Mikey whose laughter filled his days with warmth and light.
Rick was not merely a man of practicality; he possessed a larger-than-life personality and a wit that sparkled like the brightest stars in the night sky. Known affectionately as "pickle" by his siblings, he wore this nickname as a badge of honor. His fierce protectiveness of family and friends created an unshakeable bond for those fortunate enough to be in his orbit. Rick's captivating storytelling and signature jokes turned ordinary moments into cherished memories, illuminating the lives of all who gathered around him.
In his later years, Rick faced the challenges of Rheumatoid Arthritis, enduring a battle that often left him weary. Yet, in the presence of pain, he found solace in the love surrounding him, and ultimately, he is now free from suffering, at peace.
Rick leaves behind a loving family, including his mother, Shirley Holmes; his devoted children, James Holmes, Michael Holmes, and Leslie Luna; daughter-in-law Paula Holmes and son-in-law Jonathan Luna; sisters Cathy Kolsky, Cheryl Fitzgerald, Carol Barshney, Julie Cramer, Sharrah Kaferle, Cari Young, JoAnn Minger, Jody Tabler, Tina Mandrake, and Brenda Hebden; brother CJ Swiger; sisters-in-law Sherry Holmes and Maryann Swiger; brothers-in-law Jim Fitzgerald, Tim Kaferle, Rob Young and Jack Minger; with numerous nieces and nephews.
