Robert Esher Hubbs III

Robert Esher Hubbs lll, known to all as Bob, was born on January 28, 1939, to Robert and Bessie Hubbs Jr. and was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1956, serving in Japan and the Philippines. On Oct. 13, 1962, Bob and Carol were married. In 1971, Bob and Carol came to know the Lord at a Leighton Ford Crusade. After hearing a medical missionary from Bangladesh speak in their home church in 1972, they both felt called of the Lord into missions. Two years later, in 1974, along with their three children,Robert, Cynthia and Faith, they became members of Wycliffe Bible Translators. Bobs' background had prepared him to be a part of the support family of the Construction and Maintenance Department, known as C.A.M. In 1977, their family grew with the arrival of Rebecca. In the same year, in September, they accepted an assignment in North Carolina with JAARS, a support arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators. On March 1, 1984, they accepted another assignment in Indonesia which took them 125 miles into the jungle to a base where Bob took over the operations of the sawmill and all phases of construction and maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Their time there was short lived, however, because of health reasons, and in July of 1986, they were forced to return to the United States. Bob worked again at JAARS in Waxhaw, North Carolina, in the C.A.M. Dept. until he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Miraculously the Lord brought him through. After recovery, he went back to C.A.M. as a buyer. For the following 18 years, he continued to experience health problems. He and Carol retired from Wycliffe Bible Translators in 2004. Bob continued to be active at Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, as an usher, and in his earlier years, as a fourth grade Sunday School teacher. He also enjoyed bowling with his friends and traveling around the United States. On Oct. 12th, Bob faced another surgery, but due to complications, the Lord called him Home October 24, 2011. Bob will be remembered for his love and dedication to the Lord. He will also be remembered as a devoted husband,loving father, grandfather and brother. His immediate family includes his wife, Carol; four children,Robert, Cynthia, Faith and Becky; six grand-daughters,Melissa, Taylor, Brandi, Laura, Addison and Katie; his sister,Geraldine; nieces,Janet and Christine; and his nephew, Ed Jr. Bob fought a good fight, he finished the race and was a true and faithful servant. On my desk I have rested the word of God to feed my hearts' desire On my desk I have leaned for safety. A safe place to be. My desk to me is home. It is just it and me.
