Walter A. Bowles Sr., 83, was escorted by angels to his heavenly home on Wednesday, October 21, 2015. Walter, known to family as Allen, was born July 25, 1932 in Warren, NH to Clarence Henry Bowles and Adeline Abigail (Adams) Bowles. He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, Joy (Weeks) Bowles. He served in the National Guard, then the US Air Force from 1951-1953 in the Korean conflict. He and Joy joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1965 and served two terms in Papua New Guinea. He later worked at JAARS in Waxhaw for 30 years with his best friend and mentor, Leonard Boehm. He is survived by his wife Joy and his children Joy Butler and her husband Ronny Butler, Walter Bowles Jr. (Wally) and his wife Diane, James Bowles and his wife Katie, and "adopted" daughter Laurie Durling. He was an adored Grampa to Sean McElhiney, Erin Matheney, Bethany Aguad, Holly Surratt, and Rebecca, Ben, Ethan, Isaac, Jonathan, Noah, Lucinda, and Ella Bowles and his great-granddaughter Catherine Matheney. He was loved by many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and "adopted" grandchildren. Walter was a gifted writer and poet and published books of children's stories, devotions, and many poems. He had the gift of writing letters in poetry to his wife over the years, which are treasured by Joy and the family. He loved the Lord and was honored to serve Him. His favorite verse was Isaiah 6:8: "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
